A few ideas for before or after the wedding
If you have a little extra time before or after the celebrations, Tuscany is a pretty good place to turn the journey into a longer trip.
You absolutely don’t need to — these are simply a few ideas if you fancy exploring a little more of Italy at your own pace.
Firenze
If you fancy a city break either side of the wedding, Florence is the obvious choice. Think Renaissance architecture, incredible galleries, beautiful piazzas, rooftop views and more places to eat and drink than you’ll have time for.
It’s an easy place to spend a couple of days before heading into the Tuscan countryside.
Toscana
Smaller and a little slower than Florence, Siena is one of Tuscany’s most beautiful cities. Its historic centre is made for wandering, with narrow streets leading into Piazza del Campo and plenty of places to stop for coffee, wine or dinner.
A great option if you want somewhere that still feels distinctly Tuscan without staying in a major city.
Toscana
One of Tuscany’s most recognisable hill towns, San Gimignano is known for its medieval towers, winding streets and views across the countryside.
It’s an easy place to wander for a few hours, stop for lunch or gelato and soak up exactly the kind of Tuscany you’ve probably pictured in your head.
Pisa
If you’re flying through Pisa, you could easily build a little time in around your flights. The Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli are the obvious sights, but there’s more to the city once you move away from the main square.
It could work particularly well as a first or final stop before heading to the airport.
Toscana
Lucca is a beautiful walled city with a much more relaxed feel than some of Tuscany’s bigger destinations. You can walk or cycle around the old city walls, wander the historic centre and stop for long lunches without needing much of a plan.
A lovely option if you’re after somewhere quieter for a day or two.
Take it slowly
You don’t necessarily need another city on the itinerary. Some of the best days in Tuscany are the ones spent driving between small hill towns, stopping somewhere for lunch, finding a vineyard or simply seeing where the road takes you.
If you’re hiring a car, give yourself some time without too much planned. Tuscany is very good at filling in the gaps.
